Our History

Denver Academy of Ballet was established in 2001 to offer the best technical training available to students interested in pursuing a career in dance and to those who simply wish to have fun.  The schools family atmosphere and quality training have brought a deep love of dance to many families in the community.

DAB began as a vision of its founder, Bridget Matuschek.  Bridget trained at the  American Ballet Theatre and the Joffrey School of Ballet in New York under John White.  She danced professionally for 12 years, performing soloist roles, most notably with the Berlin Opera Ballet and The Colorado Ballet.  She opened the school in the basement of a medical building with about 20 students and over the years it has grown into a well established school with quality training.

In the fall of 2010 Rob and Chandra Kuykendall became the new directors and owners of DAB.  Rob began dancing in Evansville, IN and in Birmingham, AL with Thor Sutowki and Dame Sonia Arova.  He has worked professionally with Alabama Ballet, Colorado Ballet, Orlando Ballet, Ballet Nouveau Colorado and Boulder Ballet.  Rob has a diverse training and teaching background in Vaganova, Bournonville, Paris Opera and Cuban methods, having learned from such greats as Fernando Bujones, Gilbert Meyer and Wes Chapman.  Chandra received her training at the Academy of Colorado Ballet with Zhanna Dubrovskaya  and Sergey Kozadavey, now Directors of Salt Creek Ballet.  She has been dancing professionally with Colorado Ballet for 12 years and spent one season dancing with Leipzig Ballet in Leipzig, Germany.  Chandra was promoted to Principal with Colorado Ballet in 2007.  Under the leadership of these accomplished professionals, Denver Academy of Ballet strives for new heights of technical growth and artistic excellence.
